Getting started on the painting. One panel down, 4 to go. Its going to be a fairly long process....
New metal jewelry box made from steel, about 12" x 5" x 5". Cherry panels done and ready to start carving.
I have been learning welding and metal fabrication over the past couple of years and am starting to bring some of these elements into my work. This is a carved box made with angle iron and carved cherry panels, about 5" x 5" x 4". Picture of the finished piece, with it's baby :) I considered working a tiney version of the piece into the finial and made this little prototype. Didnt look right to me, but i still like the idea. I'll file that away for another time.
I began this piece in late January, 2016. No early pictures of the turning but let it dry a couple of weeks, and began the carving about a week ago. It's Maple and about 8" tall. I'm pretty much done with the carving and sanding, and finished a African Blackwood collar and base. Just mulling over colors. Stay tuned....
The shading is complete and a blackwood foot and collar have been turned. All thats left is a few coats of lacquer. I am often asked how long it takes to make my pieces, and really have never kept track. For sure they all vary, but this is the first one in which I tracked my hours fairly closely. The answer is....about 85 hours from hunk of wood to finished piece.
Started the hand-painting today. The entire piece will be brush painted prior to shading with an airbrush.
